Summer or Winter Duvet? How to Stop Feeling Cold in Winter and Sweating in Summer

A duvet that is too warm in summer means waking up in a sweat; one that is too thin in winter means hunting for a blanket at three in the morning. You don’t have to guess. Just look at three things: the duvet type (summer, all-year or winter), the filling and the construction. In this guide we explain which duvet to choose for summer, which for winter and when one duvet for the whole year makes sense.

At a glance

  • Summer duvet – light and breathable, for bedrooms at 22–26 °C.
  • All-year duvet – versatile, for bedrooms that stay at 18–22 °C for most of the year.
  • Winter duvet – the warmest, for a cool bedroom (16–19 °C); down gives plenty of warmth for very little weight.
  • An all-seasons duvet is two duvets that you use separately and fasten together into one in winter.
  • Do you get hot quickly at night? Choose a duvet one class lighter, e.g. an all-year duvet instead of a winter one.

What determines how warm a duvet is?

A duvet keeps you warm thanks to the air trapped between the fibres of its filling. The more filling there is and the loftier it is, the better the duvet insulates. That is why duvets are divided into summer, all-year and winter duvets – each one warmer than the last.

The type of filling also matters a great deal. Down provides warmth at a lower weight than synthetic fibre or wool, so a down duvet can be warm and light at the same time. The construction of the duvet also affects how warm it feels – more on that below.

Which duvet for summer?

In summer the bedroom usually warms up to 22–26 °C, while at night your body naturally lowers its temperature to sleep more deeply. A duvet that is too warm gets in the way. For summer, a light summer duvet with a thin layer of down or fibre works well. Natural fillings that wick moisture well, such as cotton, are also a good choice.

At AMW we also make duvets with breathable mesh between the panels. Air can circulate freely and the filling has room to loft. Stitch-through duvets (top and bottom fabric sewn together) are lighter and cooler, so they work well in summer.

Which duvet for winter?

In a cooler bedroom (16–19 °C), typical in winter with the window slightly open, a winter duvet is the right choice. Down gives plenty of warmth for very little weight – which is why a down duvet is warm but not heavy.

With down duvets, construction matters. Box-wall duvets (chambers separated by vertical mesh walls) let the down loft to its full height, so the duvet keeps you evenly warm across its whole surface. A wool duvet will also be warm – wool regulates temperature and wicks moisture well.

One duvet for the whole year?

If you don’t want to change your duvet every season, you have two options:

  • All-year duvet – a single duvet of medium thickness. It suits a bedroom that stays at 18–22 °C for most of the year. In a heatwave it may be too warm, and on frosty nights too cool.
  • All-seasons duvet – a set of two duvets: a lighter one for summer and a warmer one for spring and autumn. In winter you fasten them together with press studs into one, extra-warm duvet. It costs more at the outset, but replaces several separate duvets.

What to look for when buying a duvet

  • Duvet type – summer, all-year, winter or all-seasons, matched to the temperature in your bedroom.
  • Filling – down and feathers breathe well, synthetic fibres are easier to wash, wool regulates temperature well.
  • Construction – box wall, stitch-through, DUO, all-seasons.
  • Certificates – OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (textile safety) and RDS (responsibly sourced down).

You can see all these constructions illustrated on the AMW technology page. We explain how fillings differ in our guide Down, feathers or fibre? Ready-made duvets are available in the AMW shop: down duvets, all-year duvets, synthetic duvets and wool duvets.

Frequently asked questions: summer and winter duvets

Which duvet is best for summer?

A light summer duvet with a thin layer of down, fibre or a natural filling such as cotton. Duvets with breathable mesh between the panels also work well.

Which duvet is best for winter?

A winter duvet – ideally a box-wall down duvet or a wool duvet. Down gives plenty of warmth for very little weight.

Is an all-year duvet warm enough in winter?

In a heated bedroom (approx. 19–22 °C) it usually is. In a cool bedroom, a winter duvet or an all-seasons duvet fastened into one is a better choice.

What is an all-seasons duvet?

It is a set of two duvets: a lighter one and a warmer one. You use them separately in summer and in spring and autumn, and in winter you fasten them together with press studs into one, extra-warm duvet.
